I adore this dress pattern! I had planned to make it in an organic poplin in black, but started with a wearable toile in some old IKEA fabric. The fabric was a heavier weight with a lot of structure and I think it worked out perfectly to show off the unique shape of the skirt. I made size Large with no alterations. As always with TAL patterns, the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I still need to work on my zipper installation skills, but aside from that, this pattern is extremely straightforward and should be easy for someone with a little bit of sewing experience. I love the way that the darts on the bodice accentuate the shaping, and I love the full skirt. I'm working on my second Tulip Dress right now, in a clay coloured patterned poplin, and as soon as I'm done I am starting a heavier weight navy cotton version. I wore my first version to get my first vaccine dose in April and look forward to wearing my future dresses once things open up in my city and I can start dressing up again. Thanks for yet another beautiful pattern that I feel good wearing. I'm typing this as I'm wearing my latest make - TAL Almost Long Trousers :)
I loved making the Tulip dress. Instructions were really clear and the sizing and shape worked really well for me. I used a lightweight denim which was very easy to work with and which gives the skirt enough body to make the most of the interesting shape. And it has pockets. Perfect.
I still consider myself a beginner (this was my first time sewing a zipper!), but the instructions were very straightforward and sewing this Tulip dress was a breeze. The sizing is very accurate - I found myself between sizes and ended up opting for the smaller size, and although I'm still happy with the result, I think that next time I'll be better off grading the bodice up around the bust. This dress is one of my favourites and I'll be trying this pattern out on another fabric soon.
