Fabric weight
Fabric is often measured in GSM, ’grams per square meter’, and in general the heavier the weight, the thicker the fabric.
LIGHT (30–150 gsm).
For example shirting, linen, some silk fabric. Suitable for shirts, dresses, skirts and formal wear.
MEDIUM (150–350 gsm).
For example twill fabric, cotton, velvet, wool. Suitable for trousers, thicker shirts, heavier dresses, wool suits.
HEAVY (350+ gsm).
For example some canvas fabric, denim, wool flannel, tweed. Suitable for heavier jackets, outerwear, jeans.
