LAB COAT PATTERN

Skill level: Easy
A coat with pockets large enough to hold a clipboard or a small elephant

The Lab coat is a workwear inspired coat with a mid-length style. Features a hidden button front, a clean round neck and large patch pockets for added functionality.

#tallabcoat

Model is 170 cm tall and wearing a size S.

Fabric

140-150 cm fabric width

XS-S 2.7 m / M-L 2.8 m / XL 3 m / 2XL-3XL 3.4 m

110-120 cm fabric width

XS-S 3.4 m / M-L 3.5 m / XL 3.9 m / 2XL-3XL 4.0 m

Depending on which look you want there are many suitable fabric choices:

To have the workwear touch suggested fabrics are heavyweight fabric, such as canvas, twill, panama, denim, corduroy.

For a dress-like version choose a light to midweight fabric such as linen, denim, cotton twill, wool, lightweight canvas. Perhaps skip the hidden button front and choose visible buttons and no lower pockets.

Or if you’re looking for an even softer variant, more like a cardigan or kaftan, choose a lightweight fabric, visible buttons, and no pockets.

The green coat is sewn in a cotton stretch twill khaki from Metermeter.

      Beautiful lab coat

I really enjoyed making it but struggled for ages with the description of sewing the neck line on the hidden button placket ( got confused with folds, flaps and twists!) but worked it out in the end. I made it in dark denim for a friend and it looks amazing.

Yet again a perfect fit! Made it out of a sturdy punta di roma, wich wasn't the brightest idea, but hey, i love it anyways. For the next one gonna do a lightweight linen cq cotton....love the ginormous pockets wich are just brilliant. Instructions are very easy to follow....
