Meet a maker: Juud (Judith) V Hooijdonk

The creativity, joy and generosity in the sewing community never cease to amaze us!
To celebrate all you fantastic makers, we’d like to feature some of you in a series of interviews 'Meet a maker'.

Hi Juud, tell us, where do you live?

Hi guys, I’m Juud, short for Judith. 58 years of age and proud of it! I live in Breda in the  Netherlands, where i moved from a maisonette to a ground level cute little house. The best part of  it is that i now have a small sewing room....yoohoo, no more sewing on my dining room table.

How did you first get into sewing?

I started sewing, without a machine, in primary school, making clothes for my barbie doll out of old handkerchiefs , tea-towels and anything I could get my hands on.

I got my first sewing machine when i was about 14 years old, with a hand wheel ...

.........

Which is your favourite TAL pattern and why?

My favourite TAL pattern ... The almost long trousers and the hoodie parka, and I love the box pleat dress ... Ohhh and the cuff top and the cuff dress and ...

Well, I love them all actually ...

.........

How would you describe your personal style?

If i have to describe my style it would be quirky, different, unique. Bit hard to describe ... I used to be really out there with very unique patterns and prints, but nowadays I really love the minimalistic style of The Assembly Line ...

It feels very like myself and happy in my new wardrobe.

.........

Which is your favourite sewing tool and why?

My favourite sewing tool is, don't laugh, my pressing iron ... Can't do without it!

.........

What are your best sewing tips/tricks?

About sewing tips... I have watched a lot of youtube videos to learn about technical things concerning sewing and gained a lot of confidence from watching videos from Stichless.tv on youtube ...

Now I just trust the TAL patterns and the instructions - no hick ups yet ...

.........

What are the best and worst bits of sewing?

The best thing about sewing is the fast and satisfying results. The worst thing about sewing is taping the pdf patterns together - I think I have sponsored a sticky tape factory by now ...

.........

What’s your most memorable sewing mistake?

My most memorable sewing mistake ... OMG many moons ago I bought a bunch of leather, made a pattern from a rtw jacket and so far so good. When i cut the pattern pieces out of the leather I forgot to turn the pieces over, so I ended up with 2 left front, 2 left backs, 2 left sleeves ...

.........

What’s your proudest sewing moment?

My proudest sewing moment was my first ever garment that fitted, a pair of pants with elastic waist made from an old bedsheet.

.........

What do you like to listen to while sewing?

When I’m sewing i turn on my tv and “watch” my favourite programs ...

.........

What would you want to say to someone who’s trying to get started in sewing?

To someone who wants to start sewing, I would say to have fun and learn, there’s no greater reward to have sewn your own clothes!

"Have fun and learn, there’s no greater reward to have sewn your own clothes!"

Wear what you love, love what you wear ...

.........

What’s your next project?

My next project is another lab coat, for now ...

.........

What do you do when you’re not sewing?

When I’m not sewing I love to draw patterns, which I still have to sew. I love to create unique sleeves and patterns that are really out there.

But! No time to sew it up because I just love to sew all TAL patterns over and over and over and over and over again ...

  • Juud, you really are the most supportive and creative member of this inspirational group.
I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and getting to know little more about you.
I learnt a couple of tips fromTree at stiichless tv. She is an encyclopaedia of sewing knowledge and tips.
    Happy sewing Juud xx

  • Juud is my gateway ‘supplier’ – inspired by her, I have a few Assembly Line patterns! Lovely to see her celebrated here. She is a machine! I can’t get over the speed of the woman and always beautifully finished. Another BIG UP for StitchlessTV YouTube channel. Tree is an amazing teacher!

  • After sewing my first TAL box pleated dress (and wanting to make a million more), I found Juud on Instagram and have been inspired by her to try all of TAL’s patterns one by one. Thank you for letting me get to know a little more about her and for your wonderful patterns. Keep them coming!
